Apple have introduced a new security feature in iOS 14 called Private Wi-Fi Address that causes problems connecting to Staff WiFi.
When connecting to Staff Wi-Fi for the first time or following a password change, this feature must be turned off or your device will not connect to Staff Wi-Fi.
1. Open Settings and Select Wi-Fi. Before entering your username and password, please click the blue circle with the i in the middle on the right-hand side of RGS Staff.
2. Turn Private Address off by tapping the toggle button (the image below is with the feature enabled)
3. Enter your username and password as normal (you only need your initials for the username) and click Trust
Apple have introduced this feature to protect privacy. Every Wi-Fi enabled device has a unique MAC address assigned to it which forms the basis of networking. We only allow devices assigned to members of staff the ability to join the Staff WiFi and we do this by filtering devices by MAC address. This is to prevent the scenario whereby a pupil obtains the credentials of a member of staff and connects to WiFi as a member of staff with less web filtering from their own device. Apple's new feature uses a random MAC address which isn't on our whitelist. It does however protect your privacy on public networks so we encourage to use it elsewhere however it can also cause problems on home Wi-Fi.
